Well, that is a coincidence. I wonder what he’ll be doing in Norwich? After a moment’s thought I reply with my mobile number, telling him to get in touch when he arrives. It’ll be nice to see him again – and I admit I’m curious to discover what he looks like under the fake beard. I barely know the guy, but for some strange reason I find myself wanting to tell Milo about what’s happened with Adam. Perhaps going through a trauma with someone fast-tracks the friendship process? Probably best if I don’t mention it now, though, as losing a bag and a boyfriend in less than twenty-four hours looks a little sloppy.

Thinking about Milo and that fateful evening brings me right back to Flora again. She left me a voicemail on Sunday, saying how much she enjoyed seeing me at her party, and asking if I wanted to meet up for lunch, and after much deliberation I’ve concluded that the best course of action is to be decisive and proactive – so I have decided to proactively ignore her message.

The thought of seeing her again sends conflicting feelings ricocheting around my insides like emotional pinball: I find her fascinating, yet I’m embarrassed about the kiss; I’m attracted to her but at the same time a bit scared of her (well, her sexuality); I want to get to know her, but how can I when I’ve lied to her about who I really am? The momentousness of splitting up with Adam has rather overshadowed everything, but in any other circumstances what happened between us on Saturday night would be all I could think about. Yes, Katy Perry, I too kissed a girl and I liked it. Did I like it? Well, it was . . . interesting. Less prickly, obviously. I didn’t get those groin-trembling fireworks that I’ve had during previous first kisses, although from what I remember there was this soft, melting sensation that was rather lovely. But it’s not like I wanted to rip Flora’s clothes off; I’m not even sure I fancy her. The fact remains, however, that The Kiss did happen, which surely means that we’re no longer just friends – and if we’re no longer just friends, what are we? I’m so confused about where we go from here that for now it seems safer just to ignore her voicemail and focus on getting over Adam.

One emotional trauma at a time.

As soon as I walk into the Wig and Pen, a little pub just outside the city centre, I spot Charlie at a table in the far corner – and not just because she’s waving furiously.

‘Hello,’ I say. ‘Your hair is blue.’

‘You like?’ She tilts her chin and turns her head from side to side, as if modelling. ‘It’s not a bit . . . Smurf?’

‘It’s a lot Smurf. But it suits you.’

She looks pleased. ‘Oh goody. So – are you all right?’

‘Not really,’ I say in a very small voice, because I fear that if I say it any louder I’ll cry again.
